I want to start a garden of fruits and vegetables in Central Florida … What should I grow?
I am willing to devote all my garden regard. Trees are A-OK. Since I have a coconut tree, an orange, a mango tree and a candy apple. So far I think it will grow citrus, pomegranates, tomatoes, eggplants, peppers, papaya and banana. Any other suggestions? Any reason not to push one of these? Please keep your comments and criticisms on the facts and references.
I grew up on a horse farm in central West Florida – Zephyrhills, FL. We had an entire acre of our 40 acre property devoted entirely to a vegetable garden. In fact, the only thing on your list, do not grow shells was — but I am sure that grow well here because it is a tropical -. My father is a farmer and fourth-generation farmer (who also happens to be polite and not an electrical engineer who recently retired after a career 40 years Tampa Electric Company). Make sure you add the potatoes (regular and sweet) to its growing list – which are easy to grow and plants are beautiful, the more you grow in rows mixed with other plants that are larger (like beans). Lettuce is very difficult to grow in Florida without conditions greenhouse (too sensitive to pests and insects FL), but it can grow cabbage, Brussels sprouts, all kinds of beans and peas, onions (yum), carrots, leeks, melons, pumpkins, squash, all varieties of peppers, ……. I can go on and on. I just read the seed packet if you start things from seed and follow the rules! Talk to a local nursery or horticulturist (not found in the Home Depot or Lowe's, sorry to say – they sell you something just to sell it) – a local farmer is a resource much better! Use a lot of calls and start your own compost at home – which is what you need. Horse manure is the king – a good stable hook near you to ensure a plentiful supply of kindness, a gardener. Make sure you have a good irrigation available – an irrigation system with a programmable timer and / or a drip system is best. Also, consider investing for small Banty chickens (yes, chicken) – is used to control these insects in the garden rather than the use of pesticides … works well, you get more manure as a bonus. – Do not start with a plot that is too large for you to work on their own vegetables need a lot of weeding, aerating, pinching, harvesting, and general trends.
